Figure 32 - An RGB LED

RGB LEDs are different to other LEDs in that you cannot simply connect them to a battery (via a resistor of course) in order to get them to work. Instead, they require a pulse width modulation (PWM) digital signal as input on the red, green, and blue pins, which can be supplied by a micro controller or a 555 Timer. Depending on the LED, the common pin is then either connected to the positive (for a common anode) or negative (for a common cathode) supply.

How an LED is Constructed

The construction of an LED is quite different to that of a 'normal' diode. With an LED, the top of the device is surrounded by a protective, transparent, epoxy (plastic) case that protects the LED and helps to distribute the light generated by the LED.
